The cover design is by contemporary Australian aboriginal artist Cedric Varcoe. Cedric was born in Adelaide in 1984, his family is Narangga, from Point Pearce on the mission on Yorke Peninsula in South Australia and Ngarrindjeri from the area along the southern parts of the river Murray, the Coorong in southern coastal South Australia. Cedric has been painting since he was very young, inspired by watching his family paint and by the stories from Ngarrindjeri country and culture told to him by his grandfather and other elders of the Ngarrindjeri language group. Cedric has won multiple local awards and has been exhibiting since 1997.

Commonplace Books are a very purposeful way of using a journal, or giving one as a gift. They have been used since the Fifteenth Century, the idea being to record passages of text, poems, quotations, recipes, reading lists, drawings, sayings, family turns of phrase, calligraphy, aspirations - any words of perceived wisdom or personal significance - all making up a memoir of the author’s interests over a number of years. All sorts of famous people have kept Commonplace Books including John Milton, Napoleon Bonaparte, Lewis Carroll and Virginia Woolf.
