ALBUM 27 X 32 CM - EDWARD BAWDEN BROWN WAVE

Album - a book designed with spacers at the spine, so that items can be attached to the pages and the book will not lose its shape. Suitable for photographs, letters, cards, invitations, tickets, postcards and any kind of similar paper memorabilia.

This is a portrait format album, 27 cm wide x 32 cm high,  with 48 sides.  It is slightly bigger than A4 size, which means you can glue in A4 pages comfortably, without trimming them.

Pages are 200 gsm cartridge and are suitable for writing and drawing as well as attaching items.

The cover is a vintage paper from the Curwen Press (now out of print) designed by Edward Bawden. (Brown wave)

Edward Bawden (1903-1989) was a painter, illustrator and graphic artist, also serving as a war artist in World War II.

The Curwen Press came into being in 1863 and its work in the early C20th had a strong focus on well-designed commercial printing. Contemporary artists were commissioned as illustrators and designers and in the 1920s, the Curwen Press began the production of  a collection of iconic pattern papers, commissioning designs from young artists including Eric Ravilious, Enid Marx, Edward Bawden,  Engraved patterns were transferred onto lithographic plates. They were used widely in publishing, for example by the Folio Society, by Penguin and by Hamish Hamilton in the Novel Library series. With the closure of the press in 1984, the manufacture of the papers came to an end. I have been able to source a small number of vintage papers from this collection.
